The Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Tukutu Buratai has inaugurated the Board of Trustees of Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre which was established to harness the lessons learned from Nigeria’s experiences in Peace Support Operations (PSOs) over the years and to build our capacity in PSO.
This was contained in a press statement signed by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Sagir Musa, and made available to Journalists on Thursday, General Buratai said the Centre was established to train leaders, peacemakers, peacekeepers, and peace builders in conformity to the global trend
“The enormous responsibilities of transforming the centre to an international institution and galvanizing partners support for this purpose, necessitates that eminent personalities with the internationally recognized reputation are appointed as members of the board.
“It is also desirable that the board members be individuals with links to the UN, AU, ECOWAS and other agencies associated with PSO efforts. This is necessary in order to facilitate seamless collaboration between the centre and these organisations as well as the global partner community.
The Army Chief said in proposing the personalities, due consideration was given to their experience, reputation and connection with the UN and other relevant organizations.
The board will hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the centre’s premises twice yearly or anytime the occasion demands. It will also provide yearly reports to AHQ on performance of the institution as well as its future plans and strategies.

The centre is a research-base for officers, soldiers and civilians who need
vital information on Nigeria’s participation in PSOs since inception.
the members of the newly inaugurated Board, former Chief of Defence Staff General ML Agwai (rtd) to save as Chairman, Ambassador Ibrahim Gambari, Mrs Halima Ahmed from ECOWAS, Maj Gen OT Ethan (rtd), Commandant of the Centre Maj Gen AA Tarfa and Maj Gen Umelo Director Peacekeeping at the Army Headquarters as Secretary.
Furthermore, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Tukur Yusufu Buratai later unveiled phase one of the Nigerian Army Aviation Hangar located at Jaji airstrip, Jaji Military Cantonment.
He also visited Depot Nigerian Army and Nigerian Military School Zaria, where he inspected some completed and ongoing projects including a visit to the medical centre at the Depot Nigerian Army.
