The National President of Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN), Alh. Aminu Goronyo has appealed to Nigerians to remain patriotic and support the land borders closure by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
Goronyo made the plea while briefing newsmen in Jalingo on the out come of their meeting with the officials of Taraba state chapter of RIFAN and some stakeholders during a two day working visit to the state.
He said the borders closure would eventually become gold mine for the nation and younger generation, adding that the Federal government’s decision was aimed at to curtail excesses of smugglers and other illegal activities as well as to lay a solid foundation that the country can comfortably rely upon and urged Nigerians to support it.
Commenting on the essence of his visit, Alh. Aminu Goronyo said they have embarked on a tour to enable them meet with officials of the association and rice farmers with a view to find and address the challenges they are faced with.
The National President who described Taraba as ‘Nigeria’s Rice House’ also explained that he decided to start the visit with the state because of the potentials including rice the state has that could feed not only the nation but the entire west africa if are properly utilized.
He revealed that before his visit to the state, they had a meeting with Development Finance Department of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) preparatory for the commencement of 2019 dry season farming.
According to the RIFAN National President, the locally produced rice has more health benefit than those bagged for years before smuggled into the country.
“The decision to shut our land borders by President Muhammadu Buhari is because of patriotic and his love for the nation, and the younger generation are the ones to benefit from the initiative, so i am urging everyone to support the initiative.” Goronyo added.
He recalled that China closed her borders for 40 years at a time to be where she is today and India too closed her borders at a time, saying that if it will bring progress to Nigeria too it does not matter how long the border closure will take.
“Today, millers are currently in our farms buying the products. Millers are making profit and farmers are also not having back log of harvests and the economy is growing,”he said.
According to Aminu Goroyon, the Central CBN was supporting farmers under RIFAN with 100 percent funding through provision inputs at single digits to enable rice farmers produce enough rice and called on the farmers to take advantage of the programme.
